Circumcision Q & A

Do you perform adult circumcisions?

Yes, Dr. Liang performs circumcisions on males of all ages, including teens and adults.

What is involved in a circumcision procedure?

Circumcision is performed differently, depending on whether it's performed in a newborn or in an older male. In newborns, the procedure is performed soon after birth and typically takes less than 10 minutes. In older males, the procedure may take up to an hour to perform and general anesthesia or sedation is usually used. The procedure itself is similar, no matter when it's performed. During the procedure, the foreskin is disconnected from the head of the penis and the excess skin is removed. Once the tissue has been removed, sutures will be used to carefully seal the incision site.

What are the benefits of being circumcised?

Studies have found circumcision is associated with decreased risks of prostate cancer, sexually transmitted diseases, inflammation of the penis and urinary tract infections in men, as well as a decreased risk of cervical cancer in their female partners.

How quickly will I be able to return to work?

Most men find they're able to return to work after about five to seven days, once healing is well under way and pain and swelling have subsided. You should avoid strenuous activities and any type of sexual activity until Dr. Liang says you're well enough to undertake those activities. Immediately after your procedure and for a few days, you may have swelling, bruising and discomfort which can be treated with application of ice packs and pain medication. You can shower once the bandage is removed.

Will a circumcision affect my sexual pleasure or performance?

Some older men report a difference in sensations following circumcision, but studies have found most men report no change in sexual satisfaction. Circumcision does not affect sexual function.
