Kidney tumors Q & A

What are the risk factors for kidney cancer?

Several risk factors have been associated with kidney cancer, including;

  • high blood pressure (hypertension)

  • obesity

  • older age

  • smoking

  • long-term dialysis treatment

  • genetics, including inherited syndromes such as tuberous sclerosis, familial papillary renal cell carcinoma, Hippel-Lindau disease and Birt-Hogg-Dube syndrome.

What are the symptoms of kidney cancer?

In its earliest stages, kidney cancer causes few symptoms, which is why it's important to be screened or to discuss screening with Dr. Liang if you have any risk factors for kidney cancer. As kidney cancer progresses, it can cause symptoms such as:

  • blood in the urine

  • fatigue

  • unintended weight loss

  • fever

  • persistent lower back pain and achiness

How is kidney cancer diagnosed?

If you have symptoms of kidney cancer or you're at increased risk for developing the cancer, Dr. Liang will perform urine tests and blood tests to look for signs of cancer initially. Based on those results, he may also order imaging tests to look at your kidneys and the surrounding area or perform a biopsy to remove a small tissue sample from your kidneys for microscopic evaluation. If cancer is diagnosed, Dr. Liang will determine how far the cancer has advanced by staging it using CT imaging or other methods.

What treatments are available?

Treatment will depend on the type of cancer, your health, and other factors. In many cases, surgery will be performed to remove the tumor or the entire kidney when needed. Other possible treatments include cryoablation to freeze the cells or radiofrequency ablation to heat them and destroy them. When cancer has spread beyond the kidneys, radiation therapy, chemotherapy or use of special immune-boosting drugs called biologics may be ordered.
